Extending Digital Narrative

XDN is a research project and research area at the Center for Digital Narrative, University of Bergen, exploring emerging technologies as new environments for storytelling.

The project analyses forms of digital narrative that are contemporary and not yet fully settled — not part of the cultural archive of the past, but in the process of becoming. It works across three: immersive narratives in virtual and augmented reality, including modelled environments and 360 cinema; conversational works extending the interactive fiction lineage into aurality and smart speakers; and generative narratives produced algorithmically, blending human authorship with computational text generation.

XDN documents, maps, analyses and develops these forms and places them in cultural and technological context, considering how they produce affect and identification, how they entail new forms of “cyborg authorship,” and their potential cultural impacts.

The project produces scientific research and creative work in parallel, along with public-facing outputs such as the More Than Meets AI exhibitions.
