Extincture

An immersive 4-screen AI video installation prepared for the UiB museum Kunnskapsfest, 12 April 2026, featuring centre AI morphs and 200 bilingual AI-generated images of extinct animals.

A whimsical archive of species lost to the accelerating biodiversity crisis — and the innumerable mutated de-extinction entities that might yet emerge with synthetic-biological-intelligence.

Media. An 18-minute, AI-generated morphing video is duplicated and flipped horizontally to form a centre kaleidoscope. It is bracketed on each side by a card describing and depicting an extinct animal (English card on the left; Nynorsk card on the right). The animals were selected from the IUCN (2025) Red List, and the images and descriptions were generated from Wikipedia data by autonomous AI agents.

Extincture points toward the innumerable entities and creatures who have disappeared during the sixth extinction. As Elizabeth Kolbert noted in her 2015 Pulitzer Prize-winning book, The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History, “We’re seeing right now that a mass extinction can be caused by human beings.”
