The argument runs in two directions. Hallucinations — unfounded outputs — filtered through scientific rigour are accelerating discovery from protein folding to chip design; and, reading Haraway, Metzinger and Hayles, if cognition rests on simulation and mind is everywhere, then current systems may already be generating incipient self-identity formations. Science once rejected hallucination while the arts embraced it; that arrangement is now inverting.
