ReRites

Human + AI poetry: generated by a computer, edited by a human. Over one year, from May 2017 to May 2018, Johnston generated text with neural networks and carved it down by hand, producing one book each month.

Published by Anteism Books, Montreal, in 2019 as a limited-edition hardcover boxset of twelve volumes, accompanied by a volume of eight critical essays including contributions from Allison Parrish and Johanna Drucker, alongside a paperback edition and an online reading version. The exhibition form includes over 120 hours of neural-net generation video and 15 hours of editing video.
