The Inheritors

A digital essay reading William Golding’s 1955 novel The Inheritors — told from the Neanderthal side of an encounter with Homo sapiens — as a parable of obsolescence. Where Neanderthals met an incomprehensible superior intelligence, humans may soon meet AGI across a comparable comprehension gap, the incoming intelligence operating beyond the cognitive grasp of the species it displaces.

Part one of a three-part series examining extinction and synthetic intelligence through literary lenses.
